Friday 17th September - Pastimes of Lord Jagannath - Saturday 18th - September Rathayatra Festival

This Friday, in preparation for our annual seafront festival 'Rathayatra' this Saturday, we will hearing and discussing Krishna in His wooden form ('Daru Brahman') Lord Jagannath - the Lord of the Universe.

The term "juggernaut" entered the English language long before Lord Jagannatha came to British shores. Describing an "irresistible force" or procession, "juggernaut" eventually became identified with mighty battleships - and now means a large lorry.

But the original Lord Jagannatha truly embodies an irresistible force, because He is none other than Krishna: the all attractive Lord of the Universe. And the annual procession of the Deity of Krishna in the form of Jagannatha carried on the Ratha chariot enacts one of the world's oldest and largest festivals in the world. A celebration dating back thousands of years in Jagannath Puri, Orissa, India. Rathayatra has spread to cities throughout the world since the late 1960's inaugurated by Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the modern day Hare Krishna movement, and his early disciples and continued to this day all over the world.

So please join us tonight at 19.30 where the excitement and enthusiasm for Rathayatra will start at the Phoenix Community Centre and then onto the Festival itself near the i360 on Brighton seafront at 12 Noon on Saturday.
