This Friday, as we progress through the Holy month of Kartik, we will observe Govardhana Puja, commemorating the divine pastime of 5000years ago when Lord Sri Krishna lifted the Govardhana Hill to shield the cherished residents of Vrindavana from the fierce wrath of Indra, the king of the celestial demigods.
This profound episode, known as Govardhana Lila, that is desribed in the Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavat Purana) teaches us that a devotee, surrendered to the Supreme Lord and immersed in devotional service, is liberated from all obligations and doesn't need to seek material favours from anyone else.
This timeless tale is also vividly narrated in 'Srila Prabhupada's summary work known as 'Krishna Book'. To commerate, local devotee, Her Grace, Sundari Priya devi dasi, will introduce the pastime in a talk and then devotees will illustrate it in a short speaking drama.
We will have a special puja to a deity of Govardhan (Krishna), sing 'Damodarastakam' and again have the opportunity to offer a candle to Krishna and Yasoda in the special Kartik ceremony. As usual we will also have Kirtan (chanting with musical instruments), the most effective method of self-realisation for this age, and finish with a Veggie/Vegan Spiritual Feast, with a special decorated sweet pudding (Halava) version of Govardhan Hill.
We look forward to seeing you there!
