This Friday, local devotee, His Grace, Rupa Goswami das will be hosting a 'Japa' workshop, the quiet chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra on beads, that sits at the heart of 'sadhana', our daily bhakti yoga practice.
maharsīnām bhrgur aham
girām asmy ekam aksaram
yajñānās japa-yajño ’smi
sthāvarānām himālayah
Of the great sages I am Bhrgu; of vibrations I am the transcendental om. Of sacrifices I am the chanting of the holy names [japa], and of immovable things I am the Himālayas.
In this troubled age, chanting the Holy Names of Krishna, especially in Kirtan, the outward musical congregational chanting is known as the easiest method of self realisation, but most devotee practitioners know that the personal, quiet, attentive chanting on beads, Japa, can be a challenge and distraction, routine, or mechanical chanting can creep in over time.
In this workshop Rupa Goswami prabhu will explore both the theory and the practice of chanting the holy name, including:
• Why the holy name is central in Gaudiya Vaishnava practice
• What the scriptures and acharyas say about attentive chanting
• Common obstacles in japa and how devotees work through them
• Practical ways to improve focus and quality while chanting
There will also be guided chanting, discussion, and time for questions too. If you have Japa beads, please bring them, otherwise we have sets avaialble for anyone to join in.
As usual we will have Hare Krishna Kirtans (chanting with musical instruments) and finish with a Veggie/Vegan Spiritual Feast. We look forward to seeing you there!
